Has anyone written an NT service in Xblite?  Would there be anything that would prevent that from being possible?

Yes, you can create NT services in XBLite. Michael McElligott has provided a console demo called IconService. You can find it in the \demo\console\iconservice folder. Build the executable program and then follow instructions in readme.txt.
